North Bay Blooms kicked off their summer front yard garden
competition today at the Canada Post office downtown. Over the next few weeks Canada Post carriers will be bringing in nominations from around town and over 100 are expected. Under President Rupert Weimer, the North Bay Horticultural Society then takes on the task of trimming nominations down to the top ten and the North Bay Master Gardeners then select the top three front yard gardens in North Bay for 2010.

Front yard gardens chosen as it means the gardens can be enjoyed from the curbside by passersby, at anytime of day, without having to enter anyone's yard without permission. Generally front yard gardens can also make a better appearance in a neighbourhood as they are more visible and they are more sociable as the gardeners are more likely to meet and talk with neighbours and others enjoying the flowers.

The month long competition finishes up with a free bus tour of some of the top gardens and is hosted by members of the garden clubs to help with information and gardening ideas along the way. Pick up locations will be Casselholme, Empire Living and Marina Point.

In addition to the Front Yard Garden Contest North bay Blooms is also hosting weekly Wednesday night clean ups around town and the "Great Pumpkin Growing Contest,
