A large network of dedicated and amazing animal welfare professionals work across the province to protect animals from abuse and neglect, and to provide animals with shelter, care and a second chance. Each year, the Ontario SPCA encourages communities across the province to celebrate the lifesaving efforts of these everyday heroes by participating in Ontario SPCA Shelter Appreciation Week during the first full week of November.

During this year’s celebration, November 4-10, the Ontario SPCA is encouraging the public to recognize the valuable role Ontario SPCA Branches and affiliated Humane Societies play in their communities, and to take action to thank and support shelter and investigations staff for their dedication.

Ontario SPCA Branches and affiliated Humane Societies provide a variety of vital services to their communities, including: matching homeless animals with new homes; rescuing abused, neglected, injured and abandoned animals; offering education about responsible pet guardianship and other topics; helping reunite lost pets with their human families; and providing emergency care to injured or orphaned wildlife.

“This past year has been an extremely busy one for our staff, with the high number of cats and dogs admitted to our shelter ” says Stephanie Auger, North Bay & District Humane Society’s Executive Director. “I invite you to come in on Sunday, November 4th, between 12:00 and 4:00 and take a guided tour of our facility, and perhaps “get adopted” by one of our many beautiful cats or kittens while you are here”.

Here are some ways you can get involved with the North Bay & District Humane Society and share your appreciation!

• Take a tour of our shelter to meet the staff and animals and to learn more about the important services we provide. Inquire about volunteer opportunities!

• Be alert for signs of animal cruelty and neglect and report suspected abuse to the North Bay & District Humane Society at 705-474-1251, Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or police.

• Find your friend for life among the many adoptable animals being cared for at our shelter.

• Make a donation to assist with the care of the many animals in need that the shelter helps every day. We are a non-profit charitable organization that relies on the generosity of animal lovers to support our important work.

• Spread the word about the importance of responsible pet guardianship, including spaying, neutering and pet identification - a tag, ideally combined with a microchip.

• Call or send a letter, card or email to us to thank our staff for their outstanding efforts to help animals. Adoption photos and updates always bring a smile to the faces of our staff and volunteers!
