Nipissing University’s Alumni Association Board of Directors (NUAABOD) has decided to revoke Derek Burke’s Alumni Achievement Award.

Burke pled guilty to a charge of luring a child over the internet on December 6. He was awarded the Nipissing University Alumni Achievement Award in 2005.

“The board decided to revoke Derek Burke’s Alumni Achievement Award in light of his guilt on this disturbing charge,” said Brendan Wilson, NUAABOD president. “His behavior was not characteristic of a leader, and we feel he no longer meets the criteria for the award.”

The criteria for the alumni achievement award states that it “will be presented annually to an alumnus/a who has demonstrated leadership abilities, community involvement and/or displays promise of significant accomplishment in his/her chosen profession.”
