Joly Township - For the second time this week Almaguin Highlands Ontario Provincial Police have been alerted to an attempted internet fraud.

A Joly Twp woman had her suspicions confirmed when she reported receiving a cheque from France.

The complainant reported that she was attempting to sell a kitchen table for $100.00 on a popular internet “Buy and Sell” website. She received an e-mail reply from a person in France who promptly mailed her a fraudulent Government of Canada cheque for $1000.00. The suspect asked her to cash the cheque at her local bank, take her $100. for the table, ship the table and wire the remainder of the money to an address in France.

She went to the OPP with her suspicions. When officers examined the cheque, they found it to be fraudulent.

Almaguin Highlands OPP remind people to be vigilant when dealing with unknown persons over the internet. If in doubt, report suspicious transactions to police.
