The Almaguin Highlands O.P.P. detachment provided a wide range of visibility this past Canada Day long weekend and were also kept busy with a number of calls for service.

From June 30th to July 4th officers investigated 108 calls for service and police initiated incidents. This included a sudden death investigation where foul play was ruled out, five domestic violent occurrences, several reported break and enters and a wide assortment of calls for service of a minor nature. The 108 calls also included three drivers that were arrested for operating vehicles while impaired and/or exceeding the legal limit of over .08 milligrams. In all three instances the operators of the motor vehicle were charged.

In addition, the Almaguin Highlands Detachment, the North Bay Highway Safety Division Traffic Unit and the North East Region SAVE Unit spent a great deal of the weekend with a number of traffic and marine enforcement initiatives, ensuring the safety of local motorists and mariners.

In total, 174 charges were laid by police in relation to offences contrary to the Highway Traffic Act, Liquor Licence Act, Compulsory Automobile Insurance Act and the Off Road Vehicle Act. Enforcement was conducted by way of police vehicle, ATV and marine patrol throughout the entire weekend.

Police in Almaguin Highlands only responded to one personal injury motor vehicle collision during the entire weekend. That particular one involved a single all terrain vehicle on private property and no charges were laid.

The Almaguin Highlands Ontario Provincial Police would like to congratulate everyone for driving responsibly over the 2011 Canada Day weekend.
