Air Defence Park marks diamond anniversary of CFB North Bay

CFB North Bay has a rich history that has had a major impact on how our area has grown and developed over the past 60 years yet it is a history that has never formally been recorded -- that is until now. On Thursday Mayor Al McDonald and Colonel Francois Malo marked the diamond anniversary by officially opening the Air Defence Park at the top of Airport Road.

The park, which sits across the street from Jack Garland Airport, features storyboards describing important events and the rich history of the airbase in the city.

McDonald’s father served at CFB North Bay, and he says that is why he truly understands the exceptional relationship the base has had with the city and the lives of the military men, women and their families over the years. During the dedication ceremony McDonald pointed out that one of the story boards in the park chronicles a story his father used to tell him about the CF-101 Voodoo (which flew out of CFB North Bay) intercepting a Russian Bomber.

Malo says the park offers more than just story boards, he says it can be a great classroom for everyone to learn about the heritage of the flying squadrons, the underground and the Bomarc missile. He also says they have plans to grow the park and include static diplays of items like a missile and a CF18.
