A sweet cheque presentation for the Food Bank

“It’s the second largest fundraiser we have every year, Coach4Food is our first, it runs for the two months in November and December,  but this cookie campaign for the last three years has sustainably kept us moving for months.”

A sweet partnership between Tim Horton’s and the North Bay Food Bank has cooked up $32,679 for the North Bay Food Bank.

The amazing funds come from the Tim Horton’s Smile Cookie Campaign which took place the week of September 12th.

Brandon Moffat runs the Tim Horton’s on Cassell’s, Trout Lake, Northgate Shopping Centre and Esso locations. He says when the cookies are made with inadequate smiles, the bakers joke that they look like the boss.

“I think just the funniest thing with me is it happens on a daily basis for that entire week. When I walk into the back, and if I ever point out one that isn’t exactly the best smile, they always seem to tell me it resembles me on a daily basis,” Moffat said with chuckle.

“So I have no problem laughing about it, it’s a great week. We try to have a lot of fun with it and its something we are going to try to push hard moving forward.”

Katharine Strang, the North Bay Food Bank Chair, says her car will likely smell like chocolate chip cookies for the next couple months after all the deliveries she and her husband John made during the course of that week in mid-September.

She says the schools have been amazing supporters this year.

“About three years ago we approached the high schools. It was sort of a genius idea we had, thinking that the kids could help us, and now it is quite competitive between the high schools. It’s cute to see some of the schools that sell them and this year I have to give a shout out to Scollard because they sold more than 1,500 cookies for us and they are definitely the leader,” she said.

The Smile Cookie Campaign, which began in 1996, has raised as much as $5 million in 2013 for various charities in Canada and the United States.

Strang says the Food Bank is humbled that they have been the local charity of choice for the third straight year, noting that the Food Bank relies on local fundraising to keep the facility operating.

“It’s a lot of cash for us, it’s unbelievable,” she said.

“It’s the second largest fundraiser we have every year, Coach4Food is our first, it runs for the two months in November and December,  but this cookie campaign for the last three years has sustainably kept us moving for months.”
