A new grocery store opens in downtown North Bay

Soumya came to Canada to study and fell in love with North Bay. The family has now made it their permanent home

Spices Village is an Indian grocery store that had its Grand Opening Wednesday.

Co-owner Soumya Ponnappan told BayToday that her store is the perfect choice for Indian Groceries.

"We provide snacks, specialized foods and ingredients to make the perfect meal to share with your friends and family."

The menu follows the seasons, featuring the best local produce available.

She says they had a great turnout, with Mayor Peter Chirico officially opening the brand-new store.

After the ribbon cutting, there was the lighting of a lamp that celebrates a new beginning and blesses the owners' store and customers. That was followed by a holy powder that was applied to the forehead of those present.

Soumya came to Canada to study and fell in love with North Bay. The family has now made it their permanent home.

“Having faith in the City...this is what is needed," said Chirico. "A changing face leads to tremendous changes. For many of us, our ancestors came here to have a better life. In this community, we have to support each other.”

A food tasting followed. featuring Soumya's famous fried banana and mango drink.

The store, at 162 Main Street East is run by Anu Ponnappan, his wife Soumya, and their children Vyka and Varsha and Francine Boulay.

The grand opening celebrations last until Sunday. "You are all welcome," adds Soumya
