A transport driver, carrying 50,000 lbs of fresh pork lost control on Highway 17 E. in Rutherglen yesterday, spilling it's load on the side of the road.

OPP say the single vehicle accident happened just after 7 a.m. at Park St. and Highway 17 by Gagne's Red and White Store.

The truck was hauling a refrigerated trailer filled with 50,000 lbs worth of fresh pork.

Bartlett's Towing was called in to recover the trailer, but by 3 p.m. was told to dispose of the meat locally as the receiver would no longer accept it.

Since the pork was still being refrigerated and most of the load was still intact, Barlett's salvaged what it could and delivered 1,000 lbs to the Gathering Place soup kitchen, and 1,000 lbs to the Callander Food Bank, said T.J. Elzinga of Barlett's.

The remainder of the pork was disposed of at a local landfill.

"It's wonderful," Executive Director Jill Clark told BayToday. "It's roast and pork loins, so very good meat."

The donation is so big the Gathering Place had no place to store it, but Clark says Erb Transport on Commerce Court kindly donated space to accommodate the meat.

The trailer was back on its wheels by midnight and the 46 year old male driver from Quebec was charged with careless driving.
