The 45th Annual North Bay Regional Science Fair (NBRSF) was a huge success for the 85 projects and 135 participants who took part in this year’s competition held at Nipissing-Canadore College Campus today. Numerous medals, trophies, plaques, certificates and/or cheques were awarded for the scientific initiatives of these brilliant students.

The highlight of the Awards ceremony was the designation of those who will represent the region at this year's Canada-Wide Science Fair 2007 to be held in Truro, Nova Scotia, May 12 to 20. Three projects were selected for this exciting opportunity. Congratulations go to Corey Gale and Kyle Willick of West Ferris S.S. for winning Gold in the Senior Engineering Category, the Pfizer Canada Award of Excellence, the Sci-Tech Ontario Stepping Stone Award, a $1000 Nipissing University Scholarship, the Rotary Club Best Environmental Project Award and the Ontario Ministry of Environment $100 cash award; Kathleen McParland and Rachel Fung of Chippewa S.S. who were awarded Gold for their Intermediate, Life Science project, as well as the Trans Canada Award of Excellence, and the Nipissing Unversity and NSERC Travel Award for their project “Are We Destroying Our Teeth?”; Meghan Buckle of St. Hubert. Elementary who received a Gold Medal in the Junior Earth and Environment category, the Trans Canada Pipeline Award of a $1500 travel grant to the CWSF, and the Trout Lake Conservation Association Award,.

The following special awards were also presented: the Canadore College $1000 Scholarship and Captain Barry Armstrong Memorial Trophy, went to Kristine Lynham of West Ferris S.S. for “All Tire d Out!”; Ontario Power Generation / Energy Conservation and Renewable Energy Award to Greg Shaw of St. Theresa Catholic School for “Wasted Energy” Ontario Power Generation Energy Savings Award Emma Fargher and Lindsey Hutchins of William Beatty for “Hybrid Electric/Solar Oven”; Ontario Power Generation Environmental Award, to Sarah Duquette and Cassandra Brooks of St. Huberts for “Alternative Fuels”; Ontario Power Generation Renewable Resources Award, to Aaron McGarvey and Adam Turgeon of William Beatty for “Hydrogen and Water Separation”; North Bay Hydro Trophy to Cassandra McLeod and Hiral Patel of White Woods Public School for “Eureka! I Have an Idea”; The EIC / PEO Engineers' Trophy to Rachel Holloway of M.T. Davidson for “Rube Goldberg Machine”; Kumon Math and Reading Center Award, Taylor Russell of St. Hubert for “Streamlining”; Rick Savage Memorial Award and University of Ontario Institute of Technology to Joel Menard of St. Hubert for Wirreless Communication”: another OIT award went to Dane Bolton of West Ferris S.S. for “Ski Barrow”; The City of North Bay Urban Development Award, to Devan Berry and Kalli McKernon of William Beatty for “Compost Power””; the Northgate Square Biotech Award went to Katelyn Zen and Autumn Carrier of Our Lady of Fatima for “Fibre-lte, Trademark”;The Trout Lake Conservation Association Award to Adam Birosh of ´École Publique Odyssée for “La qualité d’air et de la neige – une connection?”; and the North Bay Mall Environment Award to Emmalee Grove of West Ferris S.S. for “Methane Gas: Deadly or Life Providing”.

Master of Ceremonies, Ken Anderson of the Fox presented awards for the ‘Coolest’ projects.

NBRSF Chair, Mike Pearsall was pleased with the overall results commenting, "It is very exciting to see the level of enthusiasm and quality of projects at the science fair at the Nipissing/Canadore Education Centre. The NBRSF committee wish all these brilliant students continued success on their scientific journey.” The NBRSF anticipate more schools in the region will recognize the immense value of this educational event and become involved in future years.
