$3,200 in fines for undersized Lake Nipissing walleye

On Lake Nipissing, there is a minimum size limit for walleye for recreational anglers with a zero possession limit of walleye less than 46 centimeters (18 inches) in length.

Two North Bay residents-have-been fined a total of $3,200 for possessing undersized walleye from Lake Nipissing.

Richard Reif and Debbie Robinson pleaded guilty to possessing walleye of a prohibited size and received a $1,600 fine each. In addition, their fishing licenses were suspended for one year.

Court heard that on the evening of March 13, 2016, conservation officers inspected Reif and Robinson while they were ice fishing on Lake Nipissing. During the initial contact, Reif and Robinson only showed their catch of perch to the officers. Upon further inspection, eight undersized walleye were found. The fish were seized by the officers and forfeited to the Crown.

Justice of the Peace Ruby Beck Heard the case in the Ontario Court of Justice, North Bay, on August 17.
