102 students at West Ferris Secondary School fasted for 30 hours in an act to raise awareness and money for billions of people around the world who experience hunger like this every day.

30 Hour Famine is a program started by World Vision, a non-profit organization that helps transform the lives of the world’s poorest children and families, in over 100 countries.

The West Ferris Take Action Committee spokesperson Meghan Clout said, " we can't feel like those children around the world who are starving because we are not taking care of sick siblings, walking miles for water and living daily in famine but we can help and this is our way of showing we care".

Students were required to stop eating at 3AM on Friday morning, and continue fasting until 9AM Saturday morning. After school the students stayed the night in the gym, watching movies and playing board games. Several teachers gave up their evenings to stay at the school and supervise.

The 30 hour famine adds to a large portfolio of greater citizenship of West Ferris students.

“We surpassed our goal of $3500, raising $4540 in a matter of weeks” said Meghan Clout

West Ferris had participated in the famine previously, but this is our second consecutive year, and we plan to make it an ongoing tradition. We are already planning next year’s famine, this time with a supplied breakfast to break the fast.
