20th annual Sound Travels Festival of Sound Art

The Sound Travels line up this summer brings to South River both Canadian and international artists

New Adventures in Sound Art (NAISA)is presenting the 20th-anniversary edition of its Sound Travels Festival of Sound Art which opened June 3rd and runs until September 3, this time exclusively at the NAISA North Media Arts Centre in South River. 

The festival is adopting a new format to celebrate 20 years of sound adventures by presenting 10 consecutive Saturday night performances of sound art, Sunday afternoon Arts Meetups, sound art summer camps for children, and youth and a summer-long exhibition of kinetic sound sculptures.

“Sound Travels brings together artists from many disciplines to explore the possibilities of sound as potential material for shaping and molding experiences, adding a transformative element that deepens and sharpens our attention to the world around us," says Darren Copeland, Artistic Director. "The 2018 edition of Sound Travels includes works that have as their theme ‘Sonic Reflections,’ providing a framework from within which artists can draw.”  

Sound Travels interactive exhibition Sound Machines until- Sept 3, 

Sound Machines by Walters Falls artists Steven White invites visitors to consider the value of obsolescence in our society while enjoying the kinetic movement of his sculptures made from discarded farm equipment and other industrial materials.

Sound Travels Summer Concert series every Saturday until- Sept 1,

The Sound Travels line up this summer brings to South River both Canadian and international artists representing many styles, periods and genres of sound art. North Bay Chapman Stick player Jason Brockopens the series with his ambient music performances on June 30th.  Other highlights, amongst many, invite the audience to: focus on crystals in the July 7th ‘Rock concert for the Cave’ to celebrate the opening of the Crystal Cave museum in South River; meditate and relax outdoors on July 14th to binaural ‘Psychoactive Music' composed by Aaron Labbé; enjoy explorations of the sounds of microorganisms on August 4th as performed by Montreal artists Ana Dall'Ara Majek, blablaTrains and Takuto Fukuda; experience the sounds of spaces such as factories, breweries, distilleries and British canals on August 11th with visiting artist Sherry Ostapovitch; listen to powerful cello works by Paul Dolden and Karen Tanaka as performed by Jordan Wyshniowsky from the North Bay Symphony on August 18th; and reflect on the anti-digital retro movement of analog modular synths on August 25th with featured performances by Andrew Farnsworth from Burk’s Falls.

Summer Arts Meetups 

Dive deep into culture on Sunday afternoons this summer at NAISA North. Enjoy an insightful interdisciplinary series of guest speakers discussing a variety of topics within the arts - garden design, ecology, kinetic sculptures, mental health, crystals, music from brain waves, electronic music creation, natural sound recording and much more. Our speakers include many local treasures as well as guest artists performing and exhibiting this summer at NAISA.

Sound Art Summer Camps for Children and Youth

Children (Ages 8-11 - Aug 8-11) and Youth (Ages 12-15 - Aug 21-24) will learn digital recording and editing skills as well as how to produce and discover unusual sounds using found materials, to create their own sound art compositions and performances.
