Letter: Why isn't Steve in the North Bay Sports Hall of Fame?

It's a pleasure reading about various athletes from various sporting backgrounds getting inducted, but to see a hardworking, deserving, local athlete ostracized from the Hall is troubling

To the editor:

Hello, my brother-in-law Steve McLaren deserves to be inducted into the North Bay Sports Hall of fame. Many people are wondering why Steve has not been inducted into the Hall.

Steve was a rough and rugged hockey player who has wrongly received a bad rap.

I personally nominated Steve last year and never heard back.

Steve meets the induction criteria.

My guess is Bill Barber (Steve's coach in Philadelphia) and Larry Keenan (Steve's Midget AAA coach), would say Steve should be inducted into the Hall.

Steve was the captain, and playoff MVP, of Larry Keenan's Great North Midget League Championship, Fraser Tavern squad.

Steve was a player and an important factor in the North Bay Centennials winning the OHL Championship.

As a hometown lad, this is an accomplishment of only a few hockey players. Steve is also part of a very small group of Bayites, to have ever played in the NHL.

Steve was born in Owen Sound and moved to North Bay as a baby. He went to elementary and high school in North Bay. He has lived in Trout Lake since he was 20 years old.

Steve now works for the City of North Bay and takes great civic pride in ensuring the roads are safe and well-maintained for motorists and pedestrians.

It's a pleasure reading about various athletes from various sporting backgrounds getting inducted, but to see a hardworking, deserving, local athlete ostracized from the Hall is troubling.

Curt Thomson.
