LETTER: Participation in cricket and other sports is a celebration of our community's diversity

To the Editor,

In response to Ian Saunders' letter regarding cricket and its place within our community, I'd like to offer a perspective that champions the value of this sport and its players. Cricket is more than just a game; it's a vital part of our cultural diversity and community cohesion.

The individuals who play cricket in our area are not merely participants in a sport; they are local business owners, professionals, tax-paying residents, students, retail workers, Early Childhood Educators (ECEs), Personal Support Workers (PSWs), and much more. Their contribution to our community extends far beyond the cricket field, enriching our local economy and social fabric in countless ways.

Investing in cricket and similar community sports is not a diversion of public funds towards a "private interest" but an investment in our community's well-being and unity. Sports facilities and programs not only serve as platforms for physical activity and entertainment but also play a crucial role in integrating diverse groups into the fabric of our society, fostering mutual understanding and respect.

Furthermore, it is the council's duty to serve the community and address its needs in a considerate and inclusive manner.

By supporting cricket and other sports, the council acknowledges and celebrates the diverse makeup of our community, ensuring that all members feel valued and included. This commitment to inclusivity and responsiveness is essential for fostering a community where everyone can thrive. We have the opportunity—and the responsibility—to do better by embracing and supporting the varied interests and cultures within our community.

The notion that embracing cricket—or any sport brought by immigrants—somehow detracts from the integration process into our "new homeland" is to overlook the beauty of multiculturalism. Integration does not mean forsaking one's heritage but adding to the rich tapestry of our community's cultural makeup.

See: Why is it taking so long to find a home for cricket in this city?

The story shared by Mr. Saunders about the diverse hockey team from Brampton is a testament to how sports can unite people of different backgrounds. Similarly, cricket offers an opportunity for all community members, regardless of origin, to come together in a shared love for the game.

Moreover, the idea that taxpayers should expect a "return on investment" when public funds are used to support community sports overlooks the broader benefits these activities bring. These include healthier lifestyles, reduced youth delinquency, stronger community bonds, and the promotion of inclusivity and diversity.

Encouraging participation in cricket and other sports is a celebration of our community's diversity and a step towards building a more inclusive society where everyone can find a sense of belonging. It's about recognizing and valuing the contributions of all community members, celebrating our differences, and finding common ground in activities that bring joy, health, and unity.

Let's not limit our understanding of community and culture to the sports we've traditionally known. Instead, let's embrace the new and diverse contributions that enrich our collective identity. Supporting cricket is not just about supporting a sport; it's about supporting our community's diverse and dynamic future.

Sincerely,

Councillor Inch and Councillor Lowery
