Letter: New arena building must go ahead

Welcome to North Bay 'The Gateway to We Can't Make A Decision'

The proposed new arena site is at Omischl Sports Complex in the south end of the city.

To the editor:

With the recent news that the arena process is now going to be delayed yet again, it is VERY FRUSTRATING, to say the least. Welcome to North Bay "The Gateway to We Can't Make A Decision."

Back in 2018 when I was part of a scheduling meeting for a Northern Ontario Hockey League it was decided that each centre would hold a tournament-style playoff format.  Knowing that this would take place over March Break and the Gardens probably not available I said that North Bay would have to wait until 2024 because the new rink(s) should be done by then...well guess I'm eating crow on that one.

With this new committee I'm asking that user groups be involved (would be more than welcome to join if asked).  We hear that user groups were asked about this new arena but from what I gather nothing was taken into consideration way back when drawings were shown at city hall....I can't even remember what year that was.

Has anyone checked with Sault Ste Marie to see how they were able to get a twin pad arena done a lot less than what is proposed here?  Maybe we could purchase their plans?

I hear a lot of people are opposed but those are the ones that speak up...I'm sure there are plenty that want this to happen...

If we don't build another rink before West Ferris is done the city will lose more money as ice users will be forced to go outside the city even more than they are currently.
