LETTER: Introduction to Pickleball a wonderful recreational option

'I’m happy to endorse pickleball wholeheartedly. I look forward to playing with my kids and perhaps even watching local tournaments featuring our elite players'

To the editor:

Hello Everyone, I had the delightful opportunity to learn the fundamentals of pickleball this past Saturday morning, thanks to the North Bay Pickleball Club.

As a beginner with no recent racquet sport experience—my last attempt was backyard badminton with my kids—I was pleasantly surprised by how quickly I could pick up the game and genuinely enjoy it. The sport is accessible yet I can see how competitive play demands skill, fitness, and finesse.

The warm reception provided by the club's volunteers to all newcomers, including myself, was impressive. Given the club's thriving membership of over 300, it’s clear they are doing something right. Contrary to any perceptions of exclusivity, the welcoming atmosphere and the affordable playing costs (under $100 for equipment and a $25 membership fee) speak volumes about the club’s inclusiveness.

While some may say I should stay out of the kitchen here,  I’m happy to endorse pickleball wholeheartedly. I look forward to playing with my kids and perhaps even watching local tournaments featuring our elite players. It’s also a wonderful recreational option for my friends over 55, keeping them active and engaged.

Thank you to those playing nearby for your patience with my erratic returns. I learned not only about the nuisance but also the dangers of stray balls. Thankfully, at the Bourke courts in North Bay, players actively call out “ball” to prevent accidents—a practice that I greatly appreciate, especially understanding the severe consequences of falls.

A special thanks to East Ferris for allowing me to use their pickleball courts. It was all in good humour when they teased about North Bay residents using their facilities—we share so much else, from arenas to bike trails! The quality of their courts, with smooth surfaces and fixed nets, added to my comfort and safety as a beginner. The benches were a welcome sight after hours of play.

East Ferris has said it is OK with sharing courts with people from North Bay.

Pickleball is more than just a game; it’s a community builder and a fun, safe sport for all ages. I'm excited about what the future holds for pickleball in our community.

 Kindly,

Sara Inch
