Letter: Give homeless the respect they need, treat them like human beings

To the editor:

Downtown North Bay won’t be changed without a change of attitude.

Most homeless are harmless and decent people down on their luck. We need more help for the mentally ill, more treatment centres for the addict, and mainly more reasonably priced housing for those on a low income.

Without their own home, they can’t collect welfare, get a shower, or change as often as they’d like. They need more training and opportunities that just aren’t there.

Yes, I hear that attitude all the time and it really bothers me. They are basically very nice people. I walk every day in the area of the shelter and have talked to many and have never been afraid.

Please give these people the respect they need, treat them like human beings.
