To the editor:

Writer and novelist Pearl Buck (1892-1973), known for "The Good Earth (winner of the Pulitzer Prize in 1932), and recipient of the Nobel Prize for literature, also wrote: “Our society must make it right and possible for old people not to fear the young or be deserted by them, for the test of a civilization is the way that it cares for its helpless members.”

My mother has always enjoyed the friendship of the "young", so that is not particularly the point I want to make. And as much as I respect this novelist, I'd prefer to use the term "most vulnerable".

Mealtime, which my mother should look forward to, as any of the younger would, is a source of stress for her, as my mother cannot cook for herself, and frozen dinners, are unappetizing. Our family helps as often as we can.

I was saddened, not angry, but saddened, when my elderly mother, who used to like to order a meal in, from time to time, was told by one restaurant after another in North Bay, that she has to go online using "her credit card" in order to go through a delivery service such as Skip-the-Dishes or any other of those excellent delivery services in North Bay.

Friendly and efficient, by the way!

However, due to my mother's own personal circumstances, my mother does not have the option to "order online" and contrary to this assumption, my mother does not have a "credit card."

Is anyone out there who can understand this?

I'd be curious if any restaurants would respond to my letter with their hand up, saying "We understand! Call us!"

Sincerely,

Ronda Potts,
