Letter: Defending the new female councillors

'What has been even more deflating is the utter silence from our Mayor-elect and the other men elected to Council'

Newly elected councillor Maggie Horsfield experiences her first media scrum.

To the editor:

So, it’s been over a week since the election in North Bay and the biggest news was Mark King's skepticism about the top three candidates' abilities to take on assume committee responsibilities.

Not the campaigns run by the women who landed in the top three positions or insights into what they felt resonated with voters.

It was sadly not surprising to read Mr. King's comments and hear him double down the next day. I mean, does anyone believe he would have said the same thing if Gary Gardiner was elected to the top post?

We all knew what he meant when he said it.

What has been even more deflating is the utter silence from our mayor-elect and the other men elected to Council.

Another frustrating element is the willingness of the media and others to give all the airtime to this guy.

He’s been consistent in everything he has said for years – what exactly was there going to be that was new and insightful on election night from him?

If anyone has bothered to read the comment section on any North Bay media website in the last 4 years (and I don't blame you if you haven't), it has been a steady call to bring fresh perspectives to the Council table.

That finally happens, and the story is a lament on Mr. King’s perception that the new Councillors lack experience. What a shame.

I, for one, wish Ms. Horsfield, Ms. Mitchell, Ms. Mallah, Ms. Inch, and everyone else elected for this term, all the best this term.
