LETTER: Engine 503 needs to be restored

To the editor

I bundled up on a chilly December day and ventured out, camera in hand, without expectations or pre-conceived ideas.

I walked around North Bay. Then, the 503 engine caught my eye.

It used to be displayed in an area (Lee Park) where it could be easily seen and appreciated. Sadly, it now sits alone, often forgotten.

As I approached it, my heart palpitated…I paused. Memories came flooding in, as I envisioned days of yore when locomotives were travelling the rails. I imagined my younger self, standing at the station in Worthington, Ont. hoping to sell my fresh picked blueberries.

I remembered the sound of the whistle announcing a train approaching and the joy that permeated me as the engineer smiled and waved to me. My heart filled with delight as I recalled how happy Mother was that I had sold them all.

Tears rolled down my cheeks. I touched the 503 and thanked it for providing me this memorable experience. I went from simply walking around enjoying the moment, to walking away feeling delighted and pleased.

To me, the train expresses strength and endurance. And, the photo expresses the wonder of years gone by.
