In this edition of the "Helpers" series of good news stories, we focus on Kathy Jeanneault and All Heart Pet Rescue in Powassan. The recent Covid 19 situation has affected being open to the public, as it has for many others. To verify their current availability, check their Facebook page or give them a call. Still, their story is inspiring, and a great example of a "Helper." We hope you enjoy it.

You might be surprised just how many animal lives have been saved over the years since All Heart started in 1997. And even more surprised that it's not just dogs and cats.

"We have helped find homes for approximately 5,000 dogs and 1,200 cats, and I am allergic to cats! We've also rescued two horses, two wild boars, many raccoons, many domestic bunnies, one wolf, a goose, domestic rats, and we 'relocated' a family of skunks to the Game Preserve on Hillside Road in Callander," says Jeanneault.

She explains that her challenges have changed over the years, especially after bending and carrying so many bags of food and cleaning up after so many critters.

"When I was 25 it was networking and advertising as social media didn’t exist. Now my biggest challenge is my health.  I have had two back surgeries and it’s been rough doing physical chores now."

While her passion and her work can be hard on her at times, Jeanneault says that the rewards make every drop of sweat worth it.

"I fall in love every single day of my life and I get it back 100 times more from the dogs and the supportive community. The letters (of thanks), notes, cards, emails, donations come in weekly. It’s also very humbling when I hear In lieu of flowers when someone has passed they ask that donations be sent to the pet rescue in their memory.  Martyn Funeral Home and Paul Funeral Home in Powassan have been exceptionally kind to deal with, among others," she adds.

She states that there are some very supportive businesses that are a big help for her and the animals, including "Bins and Bins, Howes Fan and Lighting Company and Pet Valu, they have stood by us since inception in 1997."

She has several loyal volunteers she's thankful for, adding "We have 10 regular weekly volunteers. We are always in need of helpers in many different capacities, from bookkeeping to poop-scooping."

One volunteer, in particular, inspires her.

"I fondly remember a senior gentleman who had lost his wife of over 50 years. He was lost and decided to volunteer with me. I eventually convinced him to take home a 9-year-old shepherd I had. When he returned to tell me I had given him a reason to live again, it gave me more love and fuel to continue," she explains.

Jeanneault says that the cost of running her facility is covered by about 50 per cent from donations, and she has to fundraise for the rest.
