UPDATE on attempt break & enter

A Calgary man faces charges today, accused of attempting to break in to a residence on McLean Road yesterday morning, and of stealing a vehicle and other items. The accused was accompanied by his Calgary-based wife, who also faces charges today.

As described in a media release issued yesterday, the accused, unknown to the victim, used a nearby ladder to climb up to the second story window of the victim’s McLean Road residence on Wednesday, August 20 at approximately 10:30 a.m. The victim heard a loud noise as he was climbing up and confronted him immediately. The accused reacted by climbing down, fleeing through the bush to a parked vehicle and driving away.

Police located the suspect in a vehicle, which matched the description provided by the victim, at the waterfront in a parking lot on Memorial Drive at approximately 7:35 p.m. yesterday evening. The suspect’s wife was also in the vehicle.

A North Bay Police investigation revealed that the vehicle they were in was reported stolen to Calgary Police. A report issued by the RCMP also revealed that the two accused were suspected of stealing property from a motel room they had occupied while in Saskatchewan. North Bay Police found the items described in the RCMP report in the vehicle.

As a result the investigation, North Bay Police charged Daryl Kupchanko, age 49, with two counts of possession of stolen property and one count of attempt break and enter. Also charged was Laurie Kupchanko, age 48, with two counts of possession of stolen property. She was also charged with one count of assault police as a result of her resistance and reaction to her arrest. Both were held in custody overnight, awaiting a bail hearing today.
