A neighbourhood pickup basketball game left a boy with "significant injuries" after he was attacked by another boy Sunday afternoon in North Bay.

Police say they were called on March 31 to a local elementary school around 5:30 p.m.

"During the game, the accused charged at the victim, punching him in the face several times.," says Constable Merv Shantz in a news release. "The attacker then threw the victim to the ground and kicked him in the face and ribs."

Other players jumped in to help the victim, and the attacker fled on foot. An ambulance was called, and the victim was taken to hospital, where he was treated for his injuries.

Officers arrested the attacker later that evening and he was taken to North Bay Police Service headquarters, where he was charged.

The  14 year old accused was held in custody for a bail hearing.

In accordance with Canada’s Youth Criminal Justice Act, the North Bay Police Service says it will not be releasing the name, or any other information, that may lead to the identification of the accused.
