R.I.D.E. stop leads to impaired charges for driver

WEST NIPISSING, Ont. — The driver has been charged with impaired driving after a vehicle was stopped at a Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere (R.I.D.E.) checkpoint.

On April 16, 2024, shortly after 2 a.m., the Nipissing West Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) was conducting a R.I.D.E. program on Front Street in West Nipissing.

Officers spoke with the driver and read them the Approved Screening Device (ASD) demand. The driver provided a sample of their breath and, as a result, was arrested and transported to the OPP detachment for further testing.

Kyle Maurice, 24, from West Nipissing, was charged with:

  • Operation while impaired - blood alcohol concentration (80 plus)
  • Operation while impaired - alcohol and drugs
  • Fail to have insurance card
  • Fail to notify change of address - licence

The accused was released and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in North Bay on May 2, 2024.

The driver was issued a 90-day Administrative Driver's Licence Suspension and the vehicle was impounded for seven days.
