Update: Police search for assault suspect in Circle Lake area

'We are asking that members of the public avoid the area if possible'

Update 2:55

Police say although the initial report was that a stabbing had occurred, further investigation revealed that it was not a knife but a blunt object involved in the assault.

Update at 2:50.

Police spokesman David Woolley says "The enhanced police presence in the area has been reduced. The public can attend the area as they normally would. Two schools - E.W. Norman Public School and Holy Cross Catholic Elementary School - were in "hold and secure," but are no longer. The investigation is ongoing and there will continue to be a reduced police presence in the area for the time being."

The hold and secure is not a lockdown and was implemented by police around 1 p.m. and was lifted about 90 minutes later.

North Bay police are in the Sage area actively searching for a suspect in an assault that took place in the Circle Lake Park today.

"A victim was transported to hospital with non-life threatening injuries," says police spokesman David Woolley. "There will be an increased police presence in the area of Madelena Drive, Lake Heights Road and Sage Road. We are asking that members of the public avoid the area if possible."

Woolley confirms that a weapon was used in the assault. The park's play structure is presently behind police tape.

A resident tells BayToday that the weapon was a knife and the assault was a stabbing, but that has not been confirmed by police.

Police were still actively searching at 2:30 this afternoon.

BayToday will update as more information becomes available.
