Pedestrian dead after being hit by transport on Highway 17 near Espanola

An early morning traffic accident on Highway 17 W shortly before 2 a.m., has killed a pedestrian.

Manitoulin OPP responded to the scene on Highway 17 at Birch Lake Road, west of Espanola.

Investigation revealed that a commercial motor vehicle struck a 33-year-old pedestrian from Sables-Spanish Rivers Township.

The victim was pronounced dead at the scene. Police have not released the name or gender of the victim.

The highway was closed for approximately seven hours and has now been reopened.

The investigation is ongoing with the assistance of the OPP Traffic Incident Management Enforcement team.
