North Bay OPP has laid nine criminal charges after a flight from police in Callander on Saturday.

On May 25 just after 1 a.m., officers were conducting a R.I.D.E. checkpoint at the intersection of Highway 94 and 654 in Callander.

A white passenger vehicle entered the R.I.D.E. lane where officers spoke to the two occupants.

"A strong odour of marijuana was emanating from the vehicle," says Detective Constable Neal Turner. "Officers instructed the driver to pull the vehicle over to the curb, however, as the passenger car inched forward, it quickly drove away."

Officers set up containment in the area and found the vehicle a short time later parked in a driveway on Stone Road. The two suspects were no longer in the vehicle and appeared to have fled on foot.

The OPP Emergency Response Team, Canine Unit, and Aviation Services assisted in the search and one individual was located and arrested.

Akil Parke, 30, from Scarborough, is charged with the following:

  • Unauthorized possession of a firearm,
  • Careless storage of a firearm,
  • Two counts of possession of a firearm or ammunition contrary to prohibition order
  • Fail to comply with a prohibition order,
  • Knowledge of unauthorized possession of a firearm,
  • Possession of prohibited or restricted firearm with ammunition,
  • Possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000
  • Possession of an identity document

Parke was held in custody and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in North Bay on May 27.

After an extensive search, the second person involved was not located. The OPP believes the suspect has fled and is no longer in the Callander area.
