Telephone Scam Alert
The North Bay Police Service would like to alert residents of a telephone scammer claiming to be from an American direct marketing company who says that the recipient of the call has just won millions of dollars in a contest and then proceeds to ask for banking information.
If you receive a call from this scammer, or any other similar caller who claims that you’ve won a big prize in a contest you don’t remember entering, or offers you a once-in-a-lifetime investment that offers a huge return, or tells you that you can buy into a lottery ticket pool that cannot lose, do not give the scammer any banking or personal information.
Simply hang up.

If you’re the victim of fraud, first contact your financial institution to make a report of the transaction and then contact the North Bay Police Service, in person at 135 Princess Street West or by phone at 705-497-5589.
Weekend Occurrences
Over the weekend, the North Bay Police Service responded to 231 calls for service that resulted in 12 arrests. Offences included warrants, breaches, domestic assaults, theft under $5000, possession of a controlled substance, public intoxication, impaired driving, sexual assault and motor vehicle theft.
Motor Vehicle Theft
At approximately 12:20 a.m. on Sunday, June 15, North Bay Police received a call from a concerned citizen who witnessed a man attempting to get into parked vehicles in the residential neighbourhood of Eastview. The complainant informed police that the man left the area in a white truck.
North Bay Police subsequently located a man in a white truck on Trout Lake Road at Bank Street. Following an investigation, North Bay Police charged Brandon Hammond, age 22, of Lisgar Street, North Bay with theft of a motor vehicle and driving a motor vehicle without a licence. The accused is scheduled to attend court for a first appearance on Tuesday July 22, 2014. Constable Lingley is investigating.
The North Bay Police Service advises vehicle owners to lock their vehicles and bring in their keys when parking their vehicles.
B&E - Public’s assistance requested
The North Bay Police request the public’s assistance in a break and enter investigation.
On Sunday, June 15, between the hours of approximately 1 a.m. and 8 a.m., an unknown person or persons entered a house on the 800 block of King Street in Callander. Items taken include clothing and electronics.
Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact the North Bay Police Service at 705-497-5555, or anonymously through Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS(8477). Constable Bell is investigating.
Fraud over $5,000 and Possession of Property Obtained by Crime
In 2012, the North Bay Police Service received information that a North Bay woman was accepting Ontario Works benefits, from September 29, 2003 to October 31, 2012, while she was operating a non-registered charity.
In order to receive Ontario Works benefits, a person is required, by law, to sign statutory declarations and claim any and all income received, or money under his or her care or control, or access to, while in receipt of Ontario Works benefits.
Following an investigation and in partnership with Ontario Works, who conducted their own investigation, North Bay Police charged Rosalie Martin, age 35 of Thelma Avenue, North Bay with one count of fraud over $5000 and one count of possession of property obtained by crime. The accused is scheduled to attend court for a first appearance on Tuesday August 5, 2014.
