North Bay man faces several charges for fraud and theft

A North Bay man faces several charges today, accused of financially abusing his elderly mother, who relied heavily on him for her daily living needs and the management of her finances.

In early 2013, persons close to the victim became concerned about possible financial abuse being perpetrated against her by the accused and informed North Bay Police of their concerns.

An ongoing North Bay Police investigation revealed that over a two-year period from early 2012 to the end of 2013, the accused used the victim’s cheques to make several unauthorized purchases. He is also accused of making several money transfers from the victim’s bank account to his own.

As a result of the investigation, North Bay Police arrested and charged the accused on Thursday, September 18 with:
three counts of fraud over $5000;
two counts of theft over $5000;
three counts of possession of property obtained by crime over $5000; and
one count of uttering forged documents.

The accused was released from custody and is scheduled to attend court in October 2014. In the interest of protecting the identity of the victim in this investigation, the name of the accused will not be released.

Tips for seniors:
Your peace of mind about financial security is important. Stay involved in and aware of what is happening with your money, your credit cards, your bank cards, your cheques, your property and your belongings. Financial abuse happens when someone you know tries to take or control what belongs to you for their own benefit, not yours.

Family members or caregivers who financially abuse seniors may:
Have addiction issues;
Have gambling issues;
Have financial problems; and/or
Feel justified in taking what they believe is “almost” or “rightfully” theirs.

If you think you or someone you know is being taken advantage of financially, please contact the North Bay Police at 705-497-5555, or come to the station in person at
135 Princess Street West to report the suspected abuse.
