TORONTO — Google says it is extending the ability for most of its 1,500 Canadian employees to work from home until at least next July.

A company spokesperson says it announced the extension of its global voluntary work-from-home option to give employees the ability to plan ahead.

The option is available to roles that don't require employees to be in the office.

The tech company has about 1,500 employees, including engineers, sales leaders and artificial intelligence researchers at offices in Waterloo, Ont., Toronto and Montreal and is building new offices in these cities to accommodate up to 5,000 employees by 2022.

An Angus Reid Institute study has suggested that about one-third of Canadians working remotely expect to resume working from the office while about 20 per cent says the will remain primarily at home.

Facebook, Shopify Inc. and Open Text Corp. have said that its employees will soon have the option to permanently work remotely.
