Toronto man facing murder charges in Timmins area shootings

The second-degree murder and two attempted murder charges stem from a September 2021 incident

A 24-year-old Toronto man is facing murder charges after a man was shot and killed and two other people were seriously injured in Schumacher last year.

Timmins Police gave the update on the Sept. 23, 2021, incident today (March 11).

In the early morning hours of March 8, Jahrelle Bishop was arrested at this Toronto residence. He has been charged with second-degree murder and two counts of attempted murder.

The accused has been brought to Timmins and remains in police custody waiting for court proceedings.

The charges stem from an investigation into the shootings that happened at a Father Costello Drive apartment in Schumacher.

Three people were found in an apartment. All the victims were from Timmins and were known to police, said Timmins Police Insp. Darren Dinel.

One man died at the scene. A man and a woman were brought to the hospital with gunshots wounds.

“All necessary resources were used to determine what had taken place and search for the person responsible for the shooting. Several pieces of evidence were obtained and used to identify the individual responsible for shooting the victims and the circumstances surrounding the murder and the two attempted murders,” he said.

At the time of the incident, police said the it was tied to the drug subculture in town.

“During the search of the scene of the homicide drugs were seized from that location. I can also confirm that drugs were seized from the residence of Mr. Bishop when he was arrested and taken into custody. Charges are pending, investigators are considering that information and evidence and putting it into context and determining whether or not offences will be laid for drug trafficking offences,” said Dinel.

Police believe Bishop is the only suspect.

“The investigators are very confident that they understand exactly what transpired on that day and one person has been arrested. Naturally they will keep an open mind to anything that takes place, but as far as they’re concerned one person is responsible and it’s Mr. Bishop for what took place that day,” he said.

There have been a number of serious incidents in town, including another unsolved murder on Mountjoy Street South.

“We don’t have any linkages to any other incidents that took place, so I can’t say that they are linked to anything else,” said Dinel.
