It's election day. Here's what you need to know

Advantages of online voting include less travel, removing time constraints, fewer line-ups at polling stations, and improved accessibility for persons with disabilities or people who are ill or away from home

It’s municipal election day across Ontario! Polling stations open at 10 a.m. and will remain open until 8 p.m. tonight.

BayToday.ca will have a live blog starting at 7:30 p.m.

The voting method has changed this year from paper ballots with tabulators to a combination of paper ballots with tabulators and internet voting.

Up until 8 p.m., during the voting period, you will be able to vote remotely using your own devices in the comfort of your home or at one of several in-person polling stations that will be made available.

Advantages of online voting include less travel, removing time constraints, fewer line-ups at polling stations, and improved accessibility for persons with disabilities or people who are ill or away from home says the City web page.

The online voting total already exceeds the 2018 advanced voting numbers. Read that story here.

Your PIN number for online voting would have been delivered by mail.

Election day Super Polls have been set us so you can vote at any of these locations:

  • Memorial Gardens (100 Chippewa St. W.)
  • West Ferris Arena (47 Gertrude St. E.)
  • Davedi Club (313 Airport Rd.)
  • Canadore College (Commerce Court) (60 Commerce Crt.)
  • Vincent Massey School (Annex) (15 Janey Ave.)

If you plan on voting today, or aren't sure if you’re qualified, the eligibility criteria are as follows:

  • Are a resident in the local municipality or are the owner or tenant of land there, or the spouse of such owner or tenant
  • Are a Canadian citizen
  • Are at least 18 years old
  • Are not prohibited from voting under subsection 17 (3) of the Municipal Elections Act, 1996 or otherwise by law

Those prohibited from voting include inmates, corporations, a person acting as an executor or trustee in any other representative capacity and those convicted of corruption within the last five years, as described in the Municipal Elections Act

If you want to brush up on the issues candidates have raised you can visit BayToday's dedicated election page here.

If you are on your way to vote, city bus rides are free today to help get you to and from the polling location.

You can check to make sure your information on the voters’ list is accurate by clicking here. Checking to make sure it’s accurate will save you time at the polling station.

The unofficial results of the election are anticipated early this evening, and with so many votes cast online, the results may be known much earlier than in previous elections. The results of the paper ballot vote — which takes longer to tabulate — will be released when they are ready over the course of the night.

But you never know.

The electronic-only voting model used in 2018 in Sudbury has been abandoned in favour of this year’s paper ballot/internet voting hybrid voting model.
