The Nipissing Region Curatorial Collective (NRCC) has opened a major exhibition of new artworks by selected Ontario Society of Artists members.
Breath, Heart, Spirit is a thematic group exhibition mounted in celebration of the 150th Anniversary of the Canadian arts organization. Over 50 new artworks are on display for the month of March at the NOVAH Gallery in North Bay at 176 Lakeshore Drive.
"The show is truly a celebration of colour and beauty," says NRCC Executive Director, Dermot Wilson.
This is the first time that the OSA has shown in North Bay.
"The hope is that area artists will be encouraged to join this prestigious association and participate in future OSA/NRCC arts exhibitions and events," adds Wilson. "In May, the OSA will be hosting, with the assistance of NRCC, an artists' retreat to Temagami and Kirkland Lake. The hope is that group exhibitions from the OSA will arrive regularly in northern Ontario communities and that artists from our regions will benefit from the exposure of their works in Toronto and other cities in southern Ontario" explains Wilson.
"When one thinks of Breath, Heart, Spirit, notions of renewed vitality, energy, and spiritual well-being come to the fore. This show is all about, not the illustrious past of this Artist's group, so much as the wellspring of creativity that the Arts promise for the future. In all of the images submitted for the exhibition, one gets a strong sense of hope and almost…relief. Is Breath, Heart, Spirit also about releasing these artworks from two years of isolation in the artists’ studios as a result of a global pandemic? They seem to be saying (through their works), “finally, we can start to have actual conversations about visual art again with everyone!!”
NOVAH Gallery, opened in 2018, is a “walkthrough” exhibition space populating the hallways at the old Tweedsmuir School on Lakeshore Drive.
