Ontario reports 2,421 new COVID cases Thursday

The latest updates also include 1,013 recoveries and nine deaths

Public Health Ontario is reporting 2,421 new COVID cases today.

The latest updates also include 1,013 recoveries and nine deaths.

The Dec. 16 updates provided by the province's public health agency and the ministry of health also reported the following data:

  • There are 14,065 active cases, up from 12,666 yesterday.
  • 328 people are in hospital testing positive for COVID-19.
  • Today's report includes 686 unvaccinated cases, 72 partially vaccinated cases, 1,530 fully vaccinated cases, and 133 cases with the vaccination status unknown. 
  • The seven-day average incidence rate by vaccination status is 20 cases per 100,000 unvaccinated people, 8.6 cases per 100,000 partially vaccinated people, and 8.3 cases per 100,000 fully vaccinated people.
  • 165 people are in ICU due to COVID-19. Of those, 147 people are testing positive and 18 are testing negative. There are 105 people in an intensive care unit (ICU) due to COVID on a ventilator.
  • Included in the hospitalized cases (not in the ICU) are 124 unvaccinated cases, seven partially vaccinated cases, and 72 fully vaccinated cases. 
  • ICU cases include 69 unvaccinated people, five partially vaccinated cases, and 24 fully vaccinated cases.
  • 11.3 million people in Ontario (77 per cent of the population) are fully vaccinated, and five per cent of the province has one dose of COVID vaccine.
  • 1.3 million people have received a booster since August 2021.
  • The province reported 54,724 tests were processed yesterday, resulting in a seven per cent positivity rate.
  • Today's new cases include 81 newborns to four-year-olds, 297 kids ages five to 11, 241 youth between 12 and 19 years old, 938 people between 20 and 39 years old, 638 people between 40 and 59 years old, 186 people between 60 and 79 years old, and 36 people over 80 years old.

Public Health Ontario has confirmed 639,341 cases of COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic, and reported 615,174 recoveries and 10,102 deaths.

The cumulative average incidence rate in the province is 4,339.2 cases per 100,000 people in Ontario.

Ontario's average seven-day incidence rate from Dec. 6 to Dec. 12 was 65 cases per 100,000 people, which is up by 37.1 per cent compared to the seven-day period starting on Nov. 30.

Northern Ontario 

In Northern Ontario, the breakdown of Public Health Ontario data is:

  • Algoma Public Health: 1,547 cases, weekly rate of 141.7 cases per 100,000 people. The health unit has reported 1,552 cases. There are 271 known active cases. Of the eligible population five years and older, 85 per cent of people have at least one dose of the vaccine and 79 per cent have both doses.
  • North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit: 987 cases, weekly rate of 29.4 cases per 100,000 people. The health unit has reported 988 cases. There are 41 known active cases. Of the eligible population five years and older, 84 per cent of people have at least one dose of the vaccine and 79 per cent have both doses.
  • Porcupine Health Unit: 2,321 cases, weekly rate of 38.8 cases per 100,000 people. The health unit has reported 2,322 cases. There are 40 known active cases. Of the eligible population five years and older, 84 per cent of people have at least one dose of the vaccine and 78 per cent have both doses.
  • Public Health Sudbury and Districts: 4,376 cases, weekly rate of 116.9 cases per 100,000 people. The health unit has reported 4,442 cases. There are 290 known active cases. Of the eligible population five years and older, 85 per cent of people have at least one dose of the vaccine and 80 per cent have both doses.
  • Timiskaming Health Unit: 465 cases, weekly rate of 103.3 cases per 100,000 people.  The health unit has reported 469. There are 52 known active cases. Of the eligible population five years and older, 82 per cent of people have at least one dose of the vaccine and 77 per cent have both doses.
  • Northwestern Health Unit: 1,297 cases, weekly rate of 29.6 cases per 100,000 people. The health unit has reported 1,292 cases. There are 36 known active cases. Of the eligible population five years and older, 91 per cent of people have at least one dose of the vaccine and 84 per cent have both doses.
  • Thunder Bay District Health Unit: 3,790 cases, weekly rate of 45.7 cases per 100,000 people. The health unit has reported 3,796 cases. There are 66 known active cases. Of the eligible population five years and older, 86 per cent of people have at least one dose of the vaccine and 80 per cent have both doses.
