Sudbury Performance Group (SPG) is looking for new board members…and you might be just the person they are looking for!

“We are specifically seeking advocates of the local music community, persons of color, multicultural members, and LGBTQ members,” explained SPG board chair, Mark Mannisto. He added, “We are looking for people who have a mix of artistic and business minded experience.”

Sudbury Performance Group is Greater Sudbury’s diverse performance arts company. Founded in 2017, SPG is a registered charitable organization that focuses on three pillars of performance arts: stand-up comedy, live music, and live theatre.

The currently nine-member volunteer board is responsible for carrying out SPG’s purpose, which is providing live performances which focus on music, theatre, and comedy, for the Sudbury community. Further, SPG fosters and promotes local talent within the cultural sector. The hope is to further develop professional artists, by allowing them an avenue to create performances across Greater Sudbury and the North.

“We are looking for new board members who will better represent our community as a whole,” said Mannisto. “We want to have a good mix of people with business acumen and people who understand the arts side of things. The time commitment is one meeting a month, and the term is a three-year term.”

Mannisto is passionate about his involvement with SPG and feels that new board members would want to have a passion about it as well. “We aren’t so concerned about potential new members having a lot of board experience, but really want them to feel strongly about the arts, about helping SPG, about stretching their wings and trying this new thing, being on a board. You don’t know what it’s like, or if it’s a good fit, until you try,” he finished.

Mannisto explained that usually the executive committee will bring ideas to the board, and it’s up to the board to decide if that new idea will be sustainable for SPG, if it will work in the community, if it makes sense or is possible to take it on. “Our new board members will be part of that process, that’s why we want them to better reflect the community we live in, so they can help map out the direction of SPG for the future,” he said.

Mannisto finished, “We are excited to meet members of our community, and potential new board members. Together, we really can and do make a difference in arts and culture in Sudbury.”
