Some Canadore College students could see their school supply expenses shrink in the New Year. Beginning in January 2011, students will have the opportunity to save up to 55 per cent off the cost of their textbooks through Follett of Canada's new Rent-A-Text program.

"The students at Canadore College rely on flexible learning options and the Rent-A-Text program supports these needs," said Shawn Chorney, Acting Vice-President, Student Services and Human Resources. "This program reduces costs and frees up resources for other things like food and housing. In addition to these benefits, digital textbooks open up doors for students with learning disabilities, because the digital texts support the use of electronic assistive devices."

Although not all titles are available, this innovative new program offers up-front savings to students by allowing them to rent select textbook titles for significantly less than the book's suggested retail price. Students will maintain many of the same benefits of owning the textbooks, like being able to highlight passages, and write notes within margins to compliment classroom teachings at a fraction of the cost.

"The Campus Shop will have a wide selection of rental titles for students to choose from," said Kelly Bouffard, Manager of the Education Centre Bookstore. "We are excited to be launching this initiative to help students with their budgets, and to extend the textbook life cycle through recycling the titles in our used book program."

In the 2009 academic year, Follett's Rent-A-Text program generated more than $60 million in student savings across approximately 780 bookstore locations in North America. It is anticipated that the savings will more than double for the 2010 academic year.
