Pop Can Ellie set to crush her last can

For the last four years Ellen Faulkner has led the charge in collecting, crushing and recycling pop cans for Habitat for Humanity’s North Bay and Blue Sky Region Affiliate. She says the program has been a labour of love but at the end of this month she will crush her last can.

“We started in April of 2006 and I'm giving it up as of March 31st of this year.”

“Four years I've been overseeing the program … we would like to have our carport back. It's part of me that I am going to miss but on the same note I'm still involved with the fundraising committee and I'll also be involved with Habitat.”

With events like the variety show, golf tournament and the amazing race Faulkner, affectionately known as 'Pop Can Ellie,' says she will keep busy but that it is time for this founding member of the organization to let someone new step in and take up the task of collecting the pop cans.

“We need new blood and you know four years I've given it and somebody else can take over the program … you can only take on so much and this was one of my first projects and it won't be my last, but I have to go on and get involved with other projects with Habitat so I am hoping this will carry on.”

Folks are encouraged to continue to drop off their cans Saturdays at the North Bay Mall outside of No Frills on Lakeshore Drive or by contacting Lise Roy who will be over seeing the Recycling Program as of April 1st. Call the HFH office and leave a message for her 705-495-6244 or via email at [email protected].

Faulkner says Ted Botwright who has been collecting around town at apartment buildings and different businesses since the beginning will continue to be a big part of the HFH Recycling Program.
