According to Rhiannon Don, there’s something afoot in online gaming worlds and she thinks she can spot it: racially divisive themes we deal with everyday are just as apparent online as they are in the real world.

Don, a seminar instructor for the English Studies department, is giving a guest lecture on the subject of the ‘racial other’ in games like World of Warcraft. Titled “Crisis in Orkientalism,” the talk will focus on the consequences of acting out stereotypical behaviours through gaming avatars and characters.

“Crisis in Orkientalism” with Rhiannon Don, MA, will be held at Wednesday, March 19th at 6.30 PM in room H105 at Nipissing University.

This guest talk is part of a Speaker Series hosted by NipissingYOU, a campus student group which focuses on community connection and leadership. For more information about their Speaker Series, visit www.nipissingyou.ca/speaker-series.
