A candle left unattended in a closet caused significant damage to a downtown apartment this morning.

The blaze broke out shortly after nine o’clock in an apartment building on Worthington Street West. One woman was injured when she jumped out a second floor window trying to escape the flames. She suffered laceration to her arms and legs, and broke bones in both her feet. She was sent to hospital by ambulance and was released Sunday afternoon.

Fire investigator, Joe Gardiner says, the victim, along with a man who lives in neighbouring apartment, have been charged with failure to maintain a working smoke alarm as a result of his investigation.

Damage is estimated at around 30-thousand dollars and was contained to one apartment. The woman is staying with family over the holidays.
