Wild's Frederick boots his way to player of the week

For the second straight week a Nipissing Wild player has taken home one of the OFC’s Special Teams Player of the Week award.

Mitch Frederick went 3 for 3 on field goals in the Wild’s 24-0 in Hamilton last Sunday. Frederick is the 5th Wild player to win a weekly award this summer.

Frederick, a Widdifield student, accounted for half of the Wild’s 24 points during the team’s playoff clinching win. In addition to the 3 field goals he also ran in 2 point convert on a botched snap and converted the other Wild touchdown.

The 12 points now puts Mitch at 7th in league scoring with 34 total points.

As kicker, Frederick has shown a strong and accurate leg in both OFC and NDA play. University of Western head coach Greg Marshall recently guest coached at Wild practice and he remarked that Frederick “definitely has a CIS caliber leg."

Other standouts in the Hamilton game were running back Jordan Sutcliffe and defensive back Jordy Matheson. Sutcliffe’s 140 yards rushing was enough to vault him to 5th in the OFC with 516 yards on the season. Matheson, a first year Wild player and already a player of the week award winner, now sits 2nd in the OFC with 110 defensive points. Against the Panthers, Jordy recorded 6 tackles, 2 assists, a fumble recovery and an interception for 18 total points.

This week the Wild (2-5) travel to Toronto to face the Jr. Argonauts (0-7).

Nipissing defeated Toronto 23-20 back in week 3 of the season on home soil. In what will be a tune-up for the playoffs the Wild hope to put together the team’s first ever back to back wins.
