Both the junior and senior Widdifield girls’ basketball teams competed at the Hoopdome Basketball Tournament in Toronto over the weekend.
Both teams won their first three games but lost in the finals.
“We won our pool in the AAA Division, going 3-0 against Cobourg, George Vanier, and Michael Power,” said Wildcats junior girls coach Stephen Hong.
“In the Finals, we played against a strong Bill Crothers from Markham and lost.”
The senior girls team played Northern (29-25), Acton (43-21), and Silverthorn (25-17).
“Because we won all three games, it brought us to the finals, there weren’t any semi-finals at all,” said Wildcats senior girls coach, Rob Brady.
In the finals, the girls lost 33-13 against York Memorial.
“We were shorthanded, we only had seven players,” explains Coach Brady. “They were happy to be in the final game, but in that final game, because we only had two spares, we were very tired.”
Despite the loss, Brady is still happy about the opportunity and experience for his team.
“Both coach Bodley and I were really excited for the girls, they had a really fun time and we were able to grow as a team together and actually run new plays, and play against teams we hadn’t seen before so it was really quite positive,” he said.
However, both Widdifield teams still came home with silver medals as both teams started off with three straight tournament wins. Megan Brouse was the high scorer for the tournament, scoring 12 points against Northern and 14 points against Acton.
