KIRKLAND LAKE, ON - The Powassan Voodoos continue to struggle in the new year as they fall to 1-2-2 in their past five games and 3-3-2 in 2016.

On Friday night, they took a 2-1 lead in the third period only to see the Kirkland Lake Gold Miners net two third period goals to defeat the visiting Voodoos 3-2 at the Joe Mavrinac Community Centre in Kirkland Lake Friday night.

Alex Hester had the game winner for the Gold Miners with five minutes left in regulation.

Bo Peltier and Tyler Peters scored for the Voodoos in the setback. Daniel Golba had two assists.

Battalion draft pick Kyle Moore nearly tied the game late on a great rush as he drove to the net but Gold Miners goalie Victor-Olivier Courchesne made a great pad save to secure the win.

Voodoos defenceman Josh Ibbitson took a costly double minor late in the second period and the Gold Miners made them pay as Sam Mancini deflected a shot past Garrett Forrest on the power play at 1:07 of the third period to tie it at 2-2.

The loss drops the Voodoos (26-8-3-1) down to third spot in the NOJHL Eastern Conference as the Gold Miners vault into second place ahead of the Voodoos.

The Voodoos look to find their way back onto the win column Sunday night when they travel to Chelmsford to face the Rayside-Balfour Canadians.

The Voodoos are back on home ice Monday night as they face Moe Mantha and the French River Rapids at home for the first time this season.

Puck drop for that game is set for 7 p.m. at the Powassan Sportsplex.
