The Cochrane Crunch picked up a pair of goals from Austin Whelan and Hunter Buzzi to help propel them to a convincing 7-1 victory over the Powassan Voodoos Friday evening in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League action at Tim Horton Events Centre as part of a three-game northern road swing for the Voodoos.

Skating in their annual Pink the Rink Game and donning special jerseys that were to be auctioned off following the game in support of the battle against cancer, Cochrane came out flying out shooting the Voodoos 17-4 in the first period, but the contest remained scoreless after 20 minutes.

However the Crunch continued to press the pace in the middle stanza and were rewarded with their efforts by scoring three times in the session on tallies provided by Whelan, Zach Hayes and Buzzi.

Whelan then made it 4-0 just nine seconds into the third before Buzzi struck shorthanded to extend the Cochrane cushion.

Powassan’s Dryden Rivet managed to put the visitors on the board midway through the third, however Justin Bofshever and Shadow Reuben tacked on two more for the hosts in the back half of the period to finish off the one-sided result.

Ethan Emanuel and Ryan Mooney dished out two assists each for Cochrane in the win on a night where they outshot the Voodoos 48-28.

Goaltender Zach Wickson recorded the victory while his Powassan counterpart Christian Cicigoi was saddled with the loss.

The Voodoos will look to rebound tonight when they face the Hearst Lumberjacks in Hearst.
