The Powassan Voodoos picked up their Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League-leading 36th win and 73rd point Saturday as they went on to defeat the French River Rapids 5-2 at Noelville Arena.

A back and forth first frame saw each side pump 16 shots apiece on net, but it finished scoreless.

In the second stanza though, Powassan got things going offensively at 4:50 as Seiji Martone put the visitors on the board.

They came right back and added another moments later on Parker Bowman’s 100th NOJHL point, which was also his 33rd goal of the season.

The Voodoos’ high-powered offense put up one more at 8:44 with Martone connecting on the power play to make it 3-0.

Regrouping, French River scored twice in rapid succession to get right back in it as Will Frustaglio and Broderick Black, with his first league goal, closed the gap.

Powassan picked up some insurance before the third period was four minutes old thanks to Joe Whittet, who picked up his 17th of 2019-20 to put the guests up by a pair.

Gregory Trudeau-Paquet extended the cushion after that as his 29th rounded out the scoring.

Shots on goal finished 50-49 in favour of the Voodoos with Owen Say picking up the victory while Ben Montgomery suffered the defeat.
