Voodoos explode with big third period to turn away Rapids

Voodoos score five unanswered third period goals in a 6-1 win.

Noelville, ON - The Powassan Voodoos got a goal and three assists from Andy Baker Friday night while his team scored five times in the third period as part of a 6-1 triumph over the French River Rapids  in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League play at Noelville Arena.

Shane Beaulieu and Dylan D’Agostino also chipped in offensively for Powassan as they tallied twice and helped set-up one other.

Baker started things off for the visitors just past the six-minute mark of the contest as he notched his league-leading 38th goal of the season for the only marker of the frame.

French River countered in the middle session to knot the score at 1-1 after two thanks to a Jacob Uridil man advantage effort with assists going to Patrick Musico and Brayden Crowe.

After testing Rapids goaltender Joel Rainville with 36 shots after 40 minutes, the Voodoos would finally get to the affiliate netminder in the third as they struck five times to pull out the win.

It was an interesting night for Rainville, who plays for the North Bay Trappers in the Great North Midget League. He and teammate Eric Mondoux dressed for French River as affiliates while forwards Joe Whittet and Mason McMahon dressed as affiliates for the Voodoos with Tyler Gervais-Rolfe and Gary Mantz both out of the lineup for the Voodoos Friday night.

D’Agostino and Beaulieu both struck twice in the stanza while Dayton Murray had the other in the period.

Nate McDonald made 21 saves to post the victory for Powassan.

Rainville was busy in defeat for French River on the night finishing with 53 stops on 59 shots.

The Voodoos are back on home ice on Monday night as they host the Iroquois Falls Eskis. Puck drop is set for 7:30 p.m. at the Powassan Sportsplex.
