Voodoos dominate NOJHL awards

The Powassan Voodoos were well represented as the NOJHL announced its regular season award winners and first and second all-star teams.  

Voodoos goaltender Nate McDonald led the way capturing the Carlo Cattarello Trophy as NOJHL MVP, the Wayne Chase Memorial Award for best goals-against average, along with being named the First Team All-Star goalie.   

McDonald also shared the NOJHL Team Goaltending award for fewest goals against with teammate Andrew Suriano.  

McDonald led all NOJHL netminders in goals-against average at 2.159 and wins with 30. He was also third in save percentage at .923 and finished tied for second in shutouts with three while playing the fourth-most minutes in the league at 2,112. 

McDonald was also a member of Team NOJHL at the Eastern Canada Cup Challenge and has committed to attend Niagara University and play NCAA D-I hockey on scholarship for the Purple Eagles in the fall.

Voodoos forward Parker Bowman was awarded the Mitch Tetreault Memorial Trophy as top defensive forward.  The 17-year-old, who hails from Bracebridge, Ont., also registered 30 points in 45 games as a rookie by scoring 16 times, including a shorthanded marker, and doling out 14 assists. 

The Voodoos, as a team, won the James Aspin Trophy as regular season champions, the Gary Hall Memorial Award for NOJHL Eastern Conference champs 

Voodoos All-Stars 

The First All-Star Team was full of Voodoos.  Joining McDonald was centre Andy Baker who led the NOJHL in goal scoring with 45 goals, and right wing Gary Mantz, who recorded 69 points in 46 games this season. 

Voodoos GM Chris Dawson was named the First All-Star team general manager for the second year in a row.  Dawson was joined by  JJ Johnson, who was named the First Team All-Star trainer/equipment manager.   

Voodoos head coach Scott Wray, who racked up his 100th career coaching win on Wednesday, was named to the Second All-Star team for the second year in a row.   

The Voodoos have some time to take in their regular season awards as they will face either the Kirkland Lake Gold Miners or the Iroquois Falls Eskis beginning in Powassan on the March 17th to 19th weekend with dates and times yet to be confirmed by the league.
