North Bay Sports Hall of Fame Chair Bill Jacko announced that veteran volleyball coach Tom Moore would be inducted into the North Bay Sports Hall of Fame on May 7th at the Best Western.

“Tom Moore spent better than a quarter century coaching and promoting volleyball, “Jacko pointed out, “his Chippewa teams won 5 OFSAA medals, captured 17 NOSSA boys crowns as well as 13 NDA titles and he became one of the most successful and respected volleyball coaches in the province.”

Born in Manitoba, Moore arrived in North Bay in 1969 to teach at Chippewa.  A former football player, he had no volleyball experience when he was asked to help coach the school’s junior boys club in 1974.  Entering wholeheartedly into the process he attended a number of clinics and seminars and before he retired from coaching in 2001 he had coached Chippewa teams for 26 years, Ontario Volleyball Association Clubs for 5 seasons and at Nipissing University for two campaigns - totalling 26 years coaching, involving 33 different teams.

His Chippewa Senior Boys teams won 11 NDA titles, including five in a row from 1993 to 1997.  At the NOSSA level the Senior Scarlet Raiders under Moore won ten boys AAA banners, racking up nine in a row from 1985 to 1993; they also won five NOSSA AA Senior events.

Moore coached 15 Raider teams that qualified and competed at OFSAA - winning 3 AA medals including a pair of golds (1994 & 1996) and a bronze.  His Chippewa crews also won silver medals in AAA twice - in 1997 losing out by one point against top seed London Oakridge in the final game.  They also won three OFSAA AAA Consolation finals.

At the Junior level his clubs won two NDA championships in three seasons and went on to win NOSSA in 1974 and ’77.

Moore coached Club Volleyball at the Midget and Juvenile levels for several seasons - placing 3rd in Ontario in Midget and 6th in the province with the Blizzard Juveniles.

He helped coach Nipissing Lakers for two seasons, handled two Summer Games crews and coached at the Madawaska Volleyball Camp for five summers, Olympia Sports Camps for three as well as at Laurentian Frontier and a pair of local camps.

He served as President of OVA District 2 for two years in the late l980’s.

Moore was presented with the first annual OFSAA AAA Volleyball Leadership Award in 1991 and the local Al Brennan award for coaching in 1996.  He became a Level III Nationally Certified Coach in l993.

Moore is one of a group of five to be inducted into the NBSHF during the organization’s 36th annual event in May.
