The North Bay U16 AAA Trappers took part in their first tournament since the early winter of 2020 this past weekend as the squad travelled south to take part in the Wendy Dufton Memorial Tournament which took place at the Western Fair Sports Centre in London, Ontario.
On Thursday night, the Trappers opened the tourney with a 2-2 tie against the Barrie U16 AAA Colts. Defencemen did all the scoring with Zach Major and Davis Anello doing all the scoring. Mikey Purkhart was in goal for the draw.
On Friday morning, the Trappers came back from a 2-1 third period deficit to defeat the Central Ontario U16 AAA Wolves 3-2. Masen Wray and Caleb Dawson had goals while Nate Gravelle provided the late game winner. Kaleb Papineau got the victory between the pipes for the Trappers.
In a short turnaround, the Trappers faced the Clarington U16 AAA Toros for a mid Friday afternoon affair.
The Trappers battled back to tie the Toros 2-2 in the third but the Clarington squad scored on an odd man rush in the final minute to edge the Trappers 3-2.
Anthony Boyes and Nate Gravelle had the goals for the Trappers while Mikey Purkhart was in net for the setback.
That meant it was a must-win situation for the Trappers in their contest against the hometown London U16 AAA Knights.
After a scoreless first, the Knights scored twice in the second period and then two more late in the third for a 4-0 win over the Trappers which knocked the North Bay area squad out. Kaleb Papineau suffered the loss in goal.
The North Bay U16 AAA Trappers are back on the ice Saturday and Sunday in Powassan as they host the Sudbury U16 AAA Nickel Capitals.
