The West Ferris Senior Girls’ Basketball Team won their second consecutive Senior Girls’ NDA Basketball Championship beating the St. Joseph-Scollard Hall Bears, 50-48 in Game 3 of the best-of-three final on Tuesday night. In a game that was a tale of two halves,

West Ferris raced out to a large lead in the first, while Scollard erased that lead in the second. The Trojans held on at the end of the game, taking a four-point lead on the strength of two crucial free throws by Mali Fex.

The Trojans got out to a blistering start, taking a 19-point lead into the halftime break, 28-9. Fuelled by the extraordinary play of Sara Romero-Cabrerizo, an exchange student from Spain, and good outside shooting by Samantha Dale, Scollard came all the way back and took a 1 point lead. In their comeback bid, Scollard outscored the Trojans 24-13 in the third quarter and 15-9 in the final frame.

The Trojans were led by point guard, Bree Evans, who made two important three-point shots, and Fex, who had 16 points,and 4 rebounds.  Mikayla Peel was close behind with 10 points, 3 steals and 14 rebounds.  The high scorer for St. Joseph-Scollard Hall was Romero-Cabrerizo with 20.

The Trojans only loss during NDA play this season was the second game of the final series.  The Trojans finished in first place with a regular season a record of 10-0, while Scollard finished in second with a record of 7-3.

These crosstown rivals met in the three-game final after West Ferris beat Franco-Cite,and St. Joseph-Scollard Hall beat Chippewa in an exciting come-from-behind victory.

The West Ferris Trojans host the A NOSSA Championship, while the St-Joseph-Scollard Hall Bears move on to the AA/AAA NOSSA Championship in Sault Ste. Marie, both of which take place this weekend.

Junior Trojans success

In junior action from last Thursday night, West Ferris beat St. Joseph-Scollard Hall to win the NDA title in two games by a score of 51-33.

The high scorers for West Ferris were Fiona Madigan, who scored 21 points, and Adelena Peel, who scored19. This marks the first time in school history that both the junior and senior girls’ basketball teams have won NDA championships in the same year and the first time the Trojans have won two consecutive senior titles after winning their first since 2003 last season.
